First officially identified in 1989, the hepatitis C virus (HCV) has now become a major public health problem.  The WHO estimates 200 million or 3% of the world population is infected with HCV and 3 - 4 million are infected each year.   Chronic carriers are at risk of developing cirrhosis, liver cancer, or need a liver transplant.
